THE MUSIc
THE SONGS. THE STORIES. THE JOURNEY.
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
I grew up listening to the radio, records, and 8-tracks. My mom and dad exposed me to a little bit of everything—Mariachi, Tex-Mex, Soul, Rock & Roll, Country, and Elvis.
It’s funny how music can take you back in time.
To this day, I tell people I remember when Elvis died. I was five years old, watching it on my parents’ Zenith television.
That’s the power of music.
The songs I sing are influenced by the music I grew up with. In many ways, those songs helped me learn about life. They became a playlist of seasons—songs connected to different times, places, feelings, and experiences.
When I sing a cover of a popular song, it isn't just about singing somebody else's song. Those songs speak to me. They help me tell a story from my perspective.
When I first started performing, I tried hard to imitate my favorite artists. I wanted to sound like them and do my very best to capture what made them special.
But as I grew as an artist, I began developing my own style and sound.
I still hear some of those influences in what I do. I probably always will.
But over time, they evolved into something that was me.
LEARNING TO WRITE
I began writing songs not long after I started playing music professionally.
It wasn't natural for me.
I had to work at it.
I was fortunate to become friends with some great songwriters, and I learned from them. I listened, I practiced, and I kept working at it.
I can't say I've completely figured it out even now.
But I did learn what writing a song is really about.
It's about life.
It's about taking something you've lived, something you've felt, or something you've seen and finding your own way to tell somebody about it.
One of my mentors told me, “Write what you know.”
Another told me, “Write until you know it’s right.”
Those are a couple of nuggets I've carried with me.
The songs on this page are a collection of stories from my life.
Some are pretty accurate to things I've lived.
Others are songs that I can truly relate to and make my own because, in some way, they speak to my life.
That's what music has always done for me.
It takes what I've lived, what I've learned, and what I've felt—and gives me a way to tell the story.
LISTEN TO THE MUSIC
The songs are the stories.
Some come from things I've lived.
Some come from things I've felt.
And some are simply songs that found their way into my life.
Take a listen.
Listen wherever you find your music.
